One of the less-known sites inside Namib-Naukluft National Park often referred to as Sossusvlei, is Sesriem Canyon. This is a shame as this stunning canyon is definitely worth a visit if you are spending more days in Sossusvlei or even if you only have 1 day in Sossusvlei. Over millions of years, the canyon has been shaped by the Tsauchab River. In a few places around the canyon it even still holds water year-round. The canyon was named by the early Afrikaan explorers in the region. They had to use six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) that were tied together to lower buckets into the canyon to get water. Thereby giving it its name Sesriem Canyon. You might find the canyon narrow at places, but it is definitely worth visiting these beautiful rock formations.
