One of the most visited historical sites in Namibia is Twyfelfontein in the Damara highland. This place is famed for its rock engravings of the San Bushmen. Over 2.500 engravings have been counted – all dating back more than 6.000 years. This is simply a place you cannot miss when in Namibia. Back in 1952, the valley was declared a national monument, and then in 2007, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place is perfect for travelers to learn about Namibia’s history and past.
The engravings at Twyfelfontein
The engravings that are found at Twyfelfontein in Namibia are considered some of the best preserved on the African continent. The engravings were made by cutting through and removing the outer layer of the rocks to reach the more yellow-shaded rock below. Over the years the engravings by the San people have then been oxidized. This has sealed the engravings and thereby preserved them very well.
Each of the engravings at Twyfelfontein shows illustrations of both animal and human lives and tracks. Some of these engravings show animals that the San people must have seen in the area, such as lions, zebras, kudus, elephants, ostriches, and rhinos. Also, seals and penguins are to be found in the engravings, which indicates that the San people have been traveling to and from the coast. This engraving simply provides an incredible insight into the history of the Damara highland and the people and tribes who once lived there.
