7 Amazing Things To Do in Namibia

October 10, 2022

Right above South Africa, you find Namibia – one of the greatest countries to visit in Africa. There are so many incredible places in Namibia that are just waiting to be explored. In addition, the landscapes of Namibia can simply not be compared to anywhere in the world. This is what makes this country so very special. From charming colonial towns, beautiful vast deserts, and breathtaking mountain ranges to the roaring ocean – there are so many incredible things to do. Therefore, we have gathered 7 amazing things for you to do in Namibia.

Wildlife in Sossusvlei

1. Explore the incredible Sossusvlei

The Sossusvlei area is home to some incredible sand dunes as well as huge clay pans in the Namib Desert. These sand dunes and clay pans with dead trees have become the most iconic site in Namibia. Sossusvlei is one of the most magnificent places in Namibia and can simply not be missed. Exploring the many sand dunes and vleis, as well as the canyon is a must in Namibia.

2. Learn about the Namibian bushmen at Twyfelfontein

Namibia has a rich history – especially when it comes to the former bushmen and tribes. The largest site of ancient bushmen rock engravings in Africa is in Namibia. These can be found at the UNESCO Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein. With 2.500 rock engravings that date back more than 6.000 years, this is a perfect place for travelers to learn about Namibia’s past.

Bonus tip: Visit in the morning to avoid crowds and midday heat

3. Experience wildlife in Etosha National Park

Namibia has a fantastic wildlife scene. Especially Etosha National Park is famed for its huge flocks of wildlife. Throughout the park, you will find water holes that attract animals from near and far. One of our highlights inside the national park was at the Ozonjuitji m’Bari water hole. Here we saw how hundreds of wildlife squabble over the best spot to stand. It was a magnificent sight to watch the animals and be able to observe how their relationships play out in their habitual environment. Experiencing the wildlife in Etosha National Park is something you simply must do when in Namibia.

4. Be amazed by the views at Sandwich Habour

Namibia is famous for its Sandwich Harbour – where the sand dunes of the Namib Desert meet the roaring South Atlantic Ocean. This incredible place is only accessible by a 4X4 tour under the navigation of a skilled guide. With this tour, you will be rewarded with some stunning scenery, a fun drive in the sand dunes, and some breathtaking views. And if you are lucky, you might even spot some wildlife on your tour. A Sandwich Harbour tour is an amazing thing you simply must do when in Namibia.

5. Visit the abandoned city of Solitaire

Nestled in the Namib Desert along dusty gravel roads you will find the small settlement of Solitaire. This little quirky town is a perfect stopover on the way to or from Sossusvlei. Here, you are able to fill up with gas, visit the chapel, admire the old rusty car wrecks, and of course visit McGregor’s Bakery for their famous apple pie.

6. Go leopard tracking in Okonjima Nature Reserve

Namibia is the perfect place if you want to experience leopards. Okonjima Nature Reserve is especially known for its leopard trekking. As home to the Africat Foundation, they research, rescue, and rehabilitate the leopards of Namibia. Tracking the leopards inside this huge nature reserve is simply a must-do when in Namibia.

7. Marvel at breathtaking nature in Spitzkoppe

In the middle of an otherwise flat landscape, you will find huge rock formations of Spitzkoppe rising from the ground. These rocks offer some incredible hikes, and old bushmen paintings, as well as some stunning views – especially at sunset. A visit to the famous Rock Arch in Spitzkoppe is therefore an amazing thing you must do on a trip to Namibia.
