Galle is a small city on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka. Even though it’s a small city it attracts thousands of tourists from around the World. And there is a special reason for that.
In the 18th century, the Dutch built their headquarters known as Galle Fort. These beautiful buildings; a hospital, museum, and different churches, still stand today. It is a part of Unesco’s World Heritage. If you follow our 3-week travel itinerary for Sri Lanka you will visit Galle Fort. In addition to Galle Fort, there are some other things you must see in the Galle area in Sri Lanka.
1. Explore Galle Fort
Galle Fort is an incredible place. We fell in love with it as soon as we arrived. The old beautiful buildings still stand today but have been redone to modern restaurants, shops, and galleries. The atmosphere in the fort and the cozy streets are especially something you can’t miss when in Sri Lanka.

2. Enjoy breathtaking sunsets
The sunsets in Sri Lanka are breathtaking. And the perfect place to watch them is on the wall around Galle Fort. Buy something to drink, relax on the wall and take in the magical view. You will not regret this experience.

3. Day-trip to Hikkaduwa
Galle is a city where the weather is warm. But there aren’t so many places where you can take a dip in the ocean. Therefore, we recommend you take a day-trip to Hikkaduwa. Here you will find nice beaches where you can relax, splash around in the water, or go snorkeling. If you are lucky you may spot some wild sea turtles – definitely a must-do.

4. Visit a sea turtle farm and hatchery
Along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, you will find a lot of sea turtle farms and hatcheries. One of these places is definitely worth a visit. The southern coast is a sanctuary for sea turtles. Therefore, their eggs are collected by the locals and hatched in these places. The turtles will then grow up healthy and afterward they will be let into the ocean.
If you are lucky you will also see grown sea turtles. These are often treated for illnesses and are let into the ocean again when they are healthy. So, if you are an animal lover, visiting a sea turtle farm and hatchery is a must-do in Galle.
