The Perfect Instagram Spot: Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa

October 3, 2022

Coconut Tree Hill is probably the most well-known place in Mirissa. And it’s definitely a must-visit when in Mirissa. The Coconut Tree Hill lies on a small peninsula outside the coast of Mirissa. This little palm tree forest has grown high and overlooks the beautiful ocean. The amazing hill has become famous across Instagram and thereby one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka. Located close to the city center the Coconut Tree Hill can be accessed every day at any time at no cost.

The locals know the place under different names; Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa’s Palm Trees, Palm Tree Grove Mirissa, and Coconut Hill Mirissa. But whatever the name, Coconut Tree Hill is worth a visit and if you follow our 3-week travel itinerary you won’t miss it on your route.

Getting to Coconut Tree Hill

Coconut Tree Hill is in the south-eastern part of Mirissa. It’s possible to get to the hill in a few ways. You can either walk or grab a tuk-tuk. Driving by tuk-tuk is the quickest way to get to Coconut Tree Hill. You should ask your driver to drop you off at the Maison D’Hotes Hotel and walk from there. The tuk-tuk drive should cost you around 200 LKR.

If you decide to walk it will take you about 15-20 minutes from the city center. There are two walking-routes you can go by. The first route is along Matara Road and then turns when you meet Coconut Tree Hill Road. Another route is to walk along Mirissa Beach. You will have to pass by Parrot Rock as well as two other bays until you get to Sunset Bar. Whether you walk along the beach or the road you will at both routes end up at the Sunset Bar. From there you can see Coconut Tree Hill. You must climb up a dirt path on the side of the hill and then you will have reached the top.

Extra info: If you walk along the beach you should be aware of the sea. If the sea is rough or there is a high tide it may not be possible to walk the whole way to Coconut Tree Hill.

Best time to visit Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa

The best time to visit Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa is around sunset. The light is magical and the scenery with the palm trees is amazing. But you should also be aware that the crowds tend to be big during the beautiful sunset.

If you on the other hand don’t mind getting up early and want to avoid the big crowds you should visit Coconut Tree Hill at sunrise. Around this time, the crowds are smaller and the light is still very beautiful.

No matter what time of the day you end up visiting Coconut Tree Hill you won’t regret it. The sight of the high palm trees and the ocean is just amazing.
